Three Powers [Print 20-Min Sermon pdf]

Psalm 49:15, “But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for He shall receive me.”  In this one verse, there are 3 powerful truths I want to show you.

1) The power of the grave is a reality.  It takes over the life of every single man or woman, young or old, beautiful or ugly.  Death is a reality.  It is a reality that is powered by the sinful nature of mankind.  “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”  “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”  The Apostle Paul concludes, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”  “The soul that sins—it shall die” so says the Prophet Ezekiel.  That is the reality of the power of the grave.  But there is another power that trumps the power of the grave.

2) The power of God is redemption, notice—“But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave.”  Of all 3 powers mentioned in this verse, this is the most potent.  In fact, there is nothing else and no one else more powerful than God.  He is the Creator of this universe and nothing, no rogue molecule escapes His majestic control.  How is God able to overpower death?  He sent His only begotten Son—the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ of Nazareth—to conquer sin and render death ineffective and inoperative!  Why?  Because of His love.  “But God commendeth His love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

3) The power of the soul is not much actually!  In fact, we’re ineffective against the power of the grave.  Moses said our lifetime will be 70 years and if by reason of strength we be given another decade and that’s it, we succumb to the power of the grave.  Many of us marvel at people who reach 100 but yet, they all surrender to the power of the grave.  There is a power of the soul that doesn’t come from him and that is repentanceAgree with God that you have sinned against Him.  Agree with God that you have tried to redeem yourself by your own and you realize your soul have no power over the grave.  God promises that He will be found by those who change their minds and attitudes toward God.  “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

There is a power of the soul that can overpower the power of the grave and that power is reliance upon the most powerful of all—Jesus Christ!
